Friends of Nylsvley’s
activities and achievements since 1991


• Have run 70 work-party weekends that have involved more than 1000 different people and have contributed more than 5000 man-hours

• Have motivated, secured funding for, and built, or assisted in building the the Sasol Kingfisher hide, the Dabchick hide, the Sasol Dragonfly walkway, the Bittern Bridge, the Jacana walkway and the Enviro-Loo at Vogelfontein

• Have secured funding for, and implemented the rehabilitation of all the windmills, watering points and boreholes in the reserve

• Participated in the removal of the game-fence between Nylsvley and Vogelfontein (this following Vogelfontein’s acquisition in 1994)

• Have assisted in the eradication of alien plants - Opuntia sp, Verbena brasiliensis, Lantana camara, Syringa, Eucalyptus, Grey poplar. Bidens bipinnata (blackjack), Tagetes minuta (kakiebos) and others (this is ongoing)

• Have maintained the Sasol Dragonfly walkway, the Sasol Kingfisher hide and the Stemmers and Jacana hides (this is ongoing)

• Have developed the Nyl trail (with the help of members of the Roodepoort Hiking Club) - this was formally opened in March 2001 at the Friends 10th anniversary celebration

• Have rehabilitated the campsite ablution blocks - converting long drops to flush toilets

• Have provided uniforms and boots, and annual Christmas parties for the Nylsvley staff

• Have contributed to the repairs and maintenance of firefighting and other reserve equipment, and have provided diesel

• Have provided sign boards and visitor information brochures for free distribution at the entrance gate

• Have run nature-based weekend courses for the layman for over 10 years on such diverse topics as waterbirds, raptors, bushveld birds, frogs, trees, stars, nocturnal creatures, spring flowers, butterflies, dragonflies, veld management and large mammals

• Have conducted - since 2000 - an annual census of woodland birds on the reserve; these involve 80 or more people each time

•Have kept Nylsvley in the public eye, and disseminated news and information about Nylsvley and the floodplain via a regular newsletter and email newsflashes to members
