Friends of Nylsvley and the Nyl Floodplain

Vision: To conserve the unique biodiversity of Nylsvley Nature Reserve and the Nyl floodplain

Objectives: To encourage the co-operation of all the stakeholders to promote the conservation and sustainable utilization of the entire floodplain and its catchment.

Plans for the future:

•Ensure that all future development in the catchment area is sustainable and in accordance with environmental legislation

•Facilitate the future extension of the reserve to include a larger portion of the floodplain and its catchment

•Facilitate management in the reserve to focus to a greater extent on the avifauna

•Facilitate the development of a sensitively-placed tourist ring-road within the reserve that encompasses the best birding areas

•Facilitate the development of a special birders’ campsite in Vaalbos Camp where there is ample space for such development

•Facilitate the setting up in the reserve of a University-supervised research station to promote avifauna-focussed studies

•Facilitate the establishment of an environmental exhibition and a small museum in the reserve which illustrates the unique features of the floodplain and its natural and cultural history

We are greatly indebted to many private individuals, clubs and organisations for funding received over the years; in particular, the World Wide Fund for Nature, the Witwatersrand Bird Club and Sasol Ltd.
